SMART Program
What is a S.M.A.R.T. Program?
We go out to schools, civic groups, prisons, religious organizations, and other gatherings to create lyrical music. Our mission is to inspire individuals to reach inside themselves with simple tools to express their feelings and desires.
Why lyrical music?
We love all kinds of music but for this program we seek to connect words with music. Our desire is to also encourage Rogers to meet Hammerstein, Lennon to meet McCartney, and Bernie Taupin to meet Elton John. This way poets and musicians can share and grow together. I personally have at least 20 songs I have co-written with poets and other songwriters. Some of them being my favorite songs. We also want to give tools and perspective to artists who write song with lyrics to refine their crafts.
Who is eligible for the S.M.A.R.T. Program?
We make ourselves available to Middle and High Schools where the arts seem the first casualties of tight budgets. Prisons as part of rehabilitation efforts. Also civic and community organizations and centers... and summer camps when staff and funds are available.
What are the benefits of S.M.A.R.T. participation?
Sometimes kind words and encouragement can make a world of difference not only for a particular song, but also in the lives of individual artists. The therapeutic value of music is well researched and documented. Music and songwriting uplifts the Spirit, is a constructive form of recreation, expression, and energetic balancing. In today's modern fast-paced lifestyle, music enhances healing and can aid in overcoming depression. Having avenues of self-expression also engenders feeling of self-worth.
It also is fun and amazing whether you sing, play, or simply hear others perform the songs.
How can we keep things going even after we offer initial classes and connections?
Part of our goal is to not only help hone the talents and connections of artists of all ages, but to also set up song circles giving positive feedback to musical and lyrical presentations. This refines the experiments in the songwriting process. If we set the intention and tone of the circles, these simple exercises can continue even without the SMART staff's participation.
